LIB-008 - Assistant Professor / Head of Public Access Services - Library - Tenure Track

Portland State University is seeking a progressive and energetic professional for the position of Head of Public Access Services, a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track librarian position with the rank of Assistant Professor.

The Head of Public Access Services supervises 10 full-time staff members and provides leadership and management of Public Access Services (PAS) activities including circulation, Summit and interlibrary loan resource sharing, reserves, off-site facilities operations, stacks maintenance, media services, copy services including photocopy and microforms operations, and van service to/from more than one library location.

This position reports to the Assistant University Librarian for Public Services, contributes to the profession through professional service and scholarly activities, and participates in faculty governance activities within the Library and University.  

Required Qualifications

  • An ALA-accredited MLS or its equivalent;
  • Five years of library-related experience;
  • Strong service orientation;
  • Successful supervisory experience;
  • Evidence of excellent planning, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to complete projects;
  • Potential to meet promotion and tenure requirements; 
  • Transcripts and background checks will be required for finalists.  Must be able to successfully complete a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Budget management experience;
  • Experience collaboratively setting and applying policies and procedures;
  • Work experience in an academic library;
  • Experience in access services;
  • Technology skills and experience appropriate for the position;
  • Employee training and development experience;
  • Working knowledge of copyright and contract issues;
  • Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems, ILL, and/or e-reserves;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Demonstrated ability to work positively and productively with diverse constituencies in rapidly changing environment;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and staff development;
  • Sound knowledge of issues and trends in public access services.

Salary and Benefits

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, as well as an excellent benefits package including fully paid health care, reduced tuition rates, and a generous retirement and vacation package. Librarians are members of the Academic Faculty and participate in University-wide faculty governance.
