CAE-004 - Program Coordinator - Student Leaders for Service in the Center for Academic Excellence

 

Position Summary

Portland State University invites applications for the position of Program Coordinator, Student Leaders for Service (SLS) program. The Program Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Student Leaders for Service Program (SLS) in the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) and reports to the Assistant Director for Community-University Partnerships (CUP). The Program Coordinator supports 20-25 undergraduate and graduate students in leadership and community engagement activities. The Coordinator serves as an enthusiastic leader, mentor, and strong voice for connecting students to community-based organizations through direct community engagement.

 

The Program Coordinator provides leadership to support students in 9 month-long community engagement placements and support to community partners in utilizing students in meaningful and productive ways. The SLS Program Coordinator works as part of a team of PSU staff that are similarly focused on promoting and advancing high quality community engagement activities for students and faculty.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise the program's student leaders for service (20-25 students per term).
  • Coordinate all aspects of program marketing, including; creating flyers, brochures and other print and electronic promotional materials
  • Assist in curriculum development for SLS required course: IST 299/499 – Community Service Practicum and PA 311 – Introduction to Civic Leadership. Facilitate weekly meetings of this course.
  • Actively pursue external funding for SLS Program
  • Manage and maintain accountability for budget allocations made to the SLS Program through the Student Fee Committee and other external funders
  • Maintain and continue to develop the community partner and SLS alumni databases
  • Develop and manage SLS retention plan for community partner sites and student teams
  • Support community engagement efforts of students and faculty campus-wide by facilitating service opportunities at SLS community partner sites including; New Student Week Service Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day, and Earth Day/Global Youth Service Day
  • Provide ongoing program assessment

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Develop and promote the connection between the SLS Program and the Civic Leadership minor.
  • Support the SLS/EDG:E program coordinator in developing and maintaining relationships with Portland public school sites and with recruiting/training SLS/EDG:E members.
  • Serve on the PSU Martin Luther King Day planning, PSU Student Leadership and SALP Advisory committees
  • Bring student-focused civic engagement workshops, guest speakers, etc. to campus

 

Minimum Qualifications / Skills

  • Knowledge of service-learning and other civic engagement strategies
  • Experience with planning and implementing community engagement programs
  • Grant writing experience
  • Experience supporting youth leadership activities
  • Strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Program management experience
  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree or other terminal degree
  • Print and/or electronic design skills
  • Research and program assessment skills
  • Experience working in a higher education setting

Compensation

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be between $32,340 and $38,000 dependent upon qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package including fully paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or one dependant at any of the Oregon University System schools.
